TSA Urges Heightened Vigilance Ahead of America’s 250th Anniversary and Other Major 2026 Events

Staying vigilant and ready during a busy holiday travel weekend

As the United States prepares to mark the Semiquincentennial, the 250th Anniversary of Independence, the Transportation Security Administration is urging surface transportation stakeholders to maintain heightened security awareness and preparedness. In a recent Security Awareness Message, TSA said nationwide celebrations tied to America250, Freedom 250, Sail250, and 2026 fireworks events, along with other large gatherings such as the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the MLB All-Star Game, are expected to increase public activity and draw significant crowds.

For bus and motorcoach operators, that message is especially important. Large public events create more complex operating environments, including heavier passenger volumes, altered traffic patterns, and busier pickup and drop-off points. TSA noted that, while its Intelligence Office is not aware of any specific or credible threats to these anniversary-related events, lone offenders and small groups may seek to exploit high-profile gatherings with little or no warning.

The Security Awareness Message highlights several risks that surface transportation stakeholders should keep in mind during this period. These include potential soft-target attacks at transit stations, platforms, and onboard vehicles; unattended items or improvised explosive devices during peak activity periods; unmanned aircraft system encroachments near facilities and event perimeters; and insider threats, including credential or uniform misuse when staffing expands for large events.

TSA also emphasizes cross-mode awareness. Public transportation and passenger rail systems are expected to experience increased activity as travelers move to and from major celebrations. For highway and motor carrier operations, TSA warns that vehicle-ramming remains a leading physical threat at crowded public events, making vigilance around staging areas, curbside zones, and event access points especially important.

In response, TSA is encouraging stakeholders to review plans and procedures for common attack types, including vehicle ramming, active shooter incidents, and edged weapon attacks. The agency also urges employers to remind team members to follow “If You See Something, Say Something®” guidance, promptly report suspicious activity in line with company policy, and ensure frontline personnel understand current reporting procedures and escalation protocols. TSA specifically points operators to coordination with company security personnel, local law enforcement, the local FBI field office, and TSA’s Transportation Security Operations Center.

One practical resource operators can use right now is STRIDE, TSA’s Surface Transportation Resource for Information, Directives & E-Sources mobile application. The app gives surface transportation stakeholders access to DHS-approved security resources, including security awareness guides, TSA program smart sheets, training videos, reference materials, and security directives. TSA describes STRIDE as a tool designed to support vigilance, readiness, and awareness by making critical security information easier to access and share.

STRIDE may be especially useful as operators prepare staff for a period of elevated activity. According to TSA’s smart sheet, the app is built for easy navigation and organized access to modal-specific counterterrorism guidance, direct links to TSA programs, and other up-to-date awareness materials.

Preparation matters. Reviewing security procedures, reinforcing reporting expectations with employees, and maintaining close coordination with law enforcement and security partners are prudent steps as the country approaches a busy calendar of high-profile events. Operators do not need a specific threat warning to strengthen awareness. This is the time to refresh plans, brief teams, and make sure trusted resources are readily available.
