As the American Bus Association celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, Destinations asked ABA members across the Northeast to reflect on the group experiences that have stood out in their destinations and the new ones they hope will wow groups in the years ahead. From historic landmarks and museums in Connecticut to coastal towns in Maine, cultural attractions in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania Dutch Country traditions, and Vermont’s scenic villages and culinary trails, the Northeast continues to offer motorcoach groups a wide range of memorable experiences. We also extend a special thank you to the tour and motorcoach operators who shared how ABA has helped them navigate and grow within the industry over the years.
Connecticut
Small State,Big Stories for Group Travelers
Sunset settles over Connecticut’s shoreline, where gentle waves, sandy stretches, and rocky edges create a serene escape at Hammonasset Beach State Park.
“Connecticut offers a wide range of historic and cultural arts attractions and experiences, including Mystic Seaport Museum. The nation’s leading maritime museum offers numerous exhibitions, a historic village and working shipyard, cruises aboard its 118-year-old wooden steamboat Sambino and other vessels, and unique indoor and outdoor spaces for group gatherings,” says Robert Murdock, president of the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau (CTMEETINGS), the state’s official meetings and events sales and marketing organization.
A classic Connecticut pie, this New Haven-style pizza features charred crust, fresh tomato, and bubbling cheese from Frank Pepe’s, one of America’s iconic pizzerias.
“For decades, motorcoach groups visiting Connecticut have gravitated toward experiences that tell the story of America. Within a short drive, travelers can step into literary history at the Mark Twain House & Museum, explore maritime heritage at Mystic Seaport Museum, or visit the newly reimagined Yale Peabody Museum—iconic stops that continue to welcome groups year after year.
“But what often surprises travelers is just how much Connecticut packs into a small space. Groups quickly discover how easy it is to turn one stop into a full day of experiences. A morning exploring one of the world-class museums or walking along the coast can become an afternoon wandering a historic downtown or arts district, and end with an unforgettable meal at a neighborhood restaurant locals love. Each of our cities and towns has its own personality shaped by the communities that live there, reflected in the culture, history, and food you experience along the way—giving groups plenty of reasons to step off the bus and explore.
“And yes—we take our pizza very seriously here. New Haven’s legendary pizzerias helped earn Connecticut the title of Pizza Capital of the U.S., and tasting a coal-fired ‘apizza’ has become something of a rite of passage for visitors. Many itineraries now build in time to experience it—because one slice usually leads to another stop.
“Looking ahead, we’re seeing groups increasingly interested in experiences that feel authentic and immersive—places where they can step off the bus and immediately connect with a community’s history, culture, and local flavor. Connecticut’s walkable cities, historic neighborhoods, and food-driven experiences are perfectly suited for that style of travel.
“As the American Bus Association celebrates a century of connecting travelers with destinations across North America, we look forward to welcoming the next generation of motorcoach groups to experience the stories, culture, and communities that make Connecticut such a memorable stop on any journey.”
—Rachel Lenda, Director of Tourism, Connecticut Office of Statewide Marketing & Tourism

Adventure Tours
A career built through ABA connections
“I am proud to say that ABA is where my career in group travel and motorcoach transportation started. In 2009, when I was in college, my aunt, Lynn Brewer, asked if I would be interested in working for her at ABA’s Marketplace, held in Charlotte, N.C., that year. It was an incredible event, and I was hooked, going on to work for ABA for nine years. Today, I am now a proud member of ABA, representing Adventure Tours, a charter bus company with locations in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. I rely on ABA heavily for regulatory assistance, educational opportunities, and networking opportunities. I also serve on the Women in Buses Council as the vice chair of communications and always look forward to volunteering during Marketplace. I recommend ABA as the association to include in your budget, and I hope to continue to be a part of ABA for a long time to come. Happy 100 years, ABA!”

The modern exterior of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art welcomes groups of all ages.
Create and explore in the art studio at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, inspiring hands-on creativity.
“As ABA celebrates its 100th anniversary, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art continues to value the important role motorcoach and group travel plays in bringing groups together through shared cultural and educational experiences like ours.
“Groups are often surprised by how much there is to experience at The Carle. We welcome visitors of all ages to explore picture book art through exhibitions, storytelling, and hands-on creativity. One group that I remember vividly last April was the Pop Culture Podcast group who traveled from all over the U.S. to see our exhibition ‘Free to Be: You and Me: Fifty Years of Stories and Songs.’ They explored the exhibition, joined our sing-along in the auditorium, made art in our Art Studio, purchased souvenirs at the Bookshop, and to their surprise, met Marlo Thomas, the original creator of the groundbreaking 1970s children’s book, album, and television special that encouraged children to imagine limitless possibilities for their future.
The Inn on Boltwood is a group-friendly historic hotel and restaurant near Amherst College where guests can enjoy farm-to-table cuisine.
“Located in Amherst on a beautiful property surrounded by orchards and wildflower meadows in the Pioneer Valley, the Carle is a peaceful and easy stop for motorcoach groups. Groups love visiting because we offer plenty of bus parking, easy drop-off at the front door, and the museum is all on one level and fully accessible with wheelchairs, walkers, assisted listening devices, and colorblind glasses available. We also work with tour operators on scheduling and costs, and a wonderful nearby country market can provide box lunches.”
— Sandra Soderberg, Community Relations Manager, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
The museum is dedicated to the work of Eric Carle and more than 300 picture book artists. Eric Carle was the beloved author and illustrator of more than 70 children’s books, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969 and now one of the most famous picture books in the world. An international champion for picture book art and books, the Carle has three galleries—one dedicated to the work of Eric Carle—that celebrate picture book art from around the world.
Groups visiting The Carle can easily build a full-day itinerary when they add nearby attractions such as the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory, Emily Dickinson Museum, Yiddish Book Center, and Smith College Botanical Garden, offering a mix of art, literature, history, and nature experiences in Hampshire County.

A taste of Pennsylvania Dutch Country tradition
Tradition meets flavor as links slowly smoke at Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats using time-honored techniques.
Famous Lebanon bologna crafted at Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats delivers bold, smoky-sweet flavor.
“As ABA celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on the kinds of memorable group experiences that have defined its century of travel—and few capture that spirit quite like a visit to Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats.
“For decades, Seltzer’s has welcomed groups into its historic Palmyra, Pa., smokehouse for an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at traditional hardwood smoking. The guided tour experience stands out for its rich storytelling, the unmistakable aroma of slow-cooked meats, and the chance to see time-honored methods still in practice. Guests walk through production areas, learn about the company’s signature double-smoking process, and enjoy generous samples of the famous Lebanon bologna. For motorcoach groups especially, the experience blends education, heritage, and hospitality—a winning combination that keeps visitors returning year after year.
“As we look ahead to Seltzer’s own 125th milestone next year, new opportunities promise to wow groups even more. Expanded interactive experiences, enhanced tasting sessions, limited-edition anniversary products, and immersive storytelling that connects four generations of family ownership could elevate the tour from memorable to truly unforgettable. There’s also exciting potential for hands-on culinary demonstrations and curated group packages that tie into Pennsylvania Dutch Country itineraries.
“In many ways, Seltzer’s embodies what group travel is all about: shared discovery, authentic local flavor, and traditions passed down through generations. As ABA honors 100 years and Seltzer’s approaches 125, the future of group experiences looks just as rich as the past—and just as delicious.”
