Growth keeps Lexington in the spotlight for meetings and events
Kentucky’s travel and tourism sector delivered another year of strong economic results in 2025, with Lexington and Fayette County continuing to stand out as a high-performing destination for meetings, conventions, and events.
According to newly shared tourism impact figures, Fayette County generated $1.71 billion in total economic impact in 2025, supported nearly 12,000 jobs, and contributed more than $133 million in state and local tax revenue. Lexington now accounts for 16.4 percent of Kentucky’s total tourism impact, reinforcing its role as one of the state’s leading destinations for business and group travel.
For meeting planners and industry partners, the numbers offer a clear signal: Lexington continues to combine destination appeal with real economic momentum.
That momentum is being matched by updates at VisitLEX, where the sales and service team is making leadership transitions designed to strengthen support for planners and partners. After 30 years of service, John Pohl, Director of Sports and Equine Sales, will retire at the end of July. Stephen Barnett, Director of Destination Sales, will assume responsibility for the sports and equine segments while continuing to lead the faith-based market, helping ensure continuity for clients and stakeholders.
VisitLEX also announced the promotion of Lara Justice to Director of Destination Sales. In her expanded role, she will lead key market segments including medical, corporate, multicultural, LGBTQ+, and film, while continuing to manage select third-party accounts and trade show activity.
The updates come as Lexington continues to make its case as a versatile and well-connected meetings destination. The city’s corporate meetings market, for example, benefits from the presence of major employers such as Toyota Motor Manufacturing, a strong regional business community, and a deep pool of highly educated talent. Together, those assets help create an environment well-suited for productive, relationship-driven business gatherings.
Lexington’s venue mix also remains part of its appeal. Castle & Key Distillery is one example of the destination’s distinctive event offerings, pairing historic character with modern event capabilities across scenic indoor and outdoor spaces that work well for meetings, retreats, and curated group experiences.
Lexington’s latest tourism results underscore a broader point: destinations that can demonstrate both economic strength and partner readiness are well-positioned in a competitive marketplace. Based on these 2025 results and VisitLEX’s team updates, Lexington appears intent on building on both.
