Washington DC Summer Road Closures

Operators traveling through the District need to know what routes are closed and when.

July 4 | Freedom 250 Salute to America Road Closures

The Freedom 250 Salute to America will impact access to the popular National Air and Space Museum, as well as other Museums located on the National Mall and in downtown DC.

  • NO vehicular traffic will be permitted on the streets surrounding the Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall. 
  • Starting at 4:00 am on July 4, Independence Avenue will be closed from 12th Street to Washington Avenue.
  • This adds to the road closures currently in place for Jefferson Drive, 4th Street, and 7th Street.
  • There will also be parking/stopping restrictions on streets near the closed roads.

FIFA Fan Festival and Great American State Fair | Now Through July 19

  • Jefferson Drive, 4th Street, and 7th Streets SW are closed to traffic, along with other streets adjacent to Smithsonian Museums. Traffic may cross the Mall only on 3rd and 12th Streets.
  • Pedestrians wishing to cross the Mall may also do so on 3rd and 12th Streets.  The other streets are passable on foot, after going through security checkpoints for the State Fair.

Freedom 250 Race | August 14 – 23

  • Independence Avenue (between 3rd and 7th Streets) will be closed

August 18 – 23 – additional closures

  • 3rd Street (between Independence and Constitution Avenues)
  • 7th Street (between Maryland and Pennsylvania Avenues)
  • Jefferson Drive (between 3rd and 7th Streets)

NO vehicular traffic will be permitted on streets surrounding the Smithsonian Museums within the course perimeter between August 18 and 23.
