Earth Day 2025: Motorcoach Sustainability Hub

Social Media | Apr 22 | All Day

For Earth Day 2025, the American Bus Association encourages its members to share resources about the eco-friendly benefits of motorcoach travel through social media posts, blog posts, newsletters, and more.

The ABA Foundation (ABAF) and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) analyzed energy emissions and the amount of pollutants released to evaluate the environmental performance of motorcoach operations. The results found that motorcoaches are an eco-friendlier way to travel than vanpooling (van-carpooling), passenger cars, light rail, and ferry boats. The full report can be found here.

When it comes to eco-friendly travel, motorcoaches set the standard:

  • 🚗 Cars use 8x more energy.
  • 🚐 Vans only cover ½ the passenger miles per diesel gallon.
  • ⛴️ Ferry boats emit 19x more nitrogen oxides.
  • 🚆 Light rail produces 7x more CO2.

How much energy does your ride use? In their latest report, the American Bus Association Foundation and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute measured energy use per passenger mile:

  • Passenger cars: 5482 BTU
  • Light rail: 2725 BTU
  • Vanpool: 1425 BTU
  • Motorcoach: only 710 BTU

Motorcoaches are only becoming more eco-friendly. Between 2019 and 2021, a recent study found a 30% drop in pollutants due to older vehicles being replaced by newer buses.
