AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)

Since 1998, motorcoach operators have scrambled to comply with the Department of Transportation's Americans with Disabilities Act requirements to provide special accommodations to disabled passengers. With a typical wheelchair lift costing operators upwards of $40,000 per coach for the lift acquisition, installation and employee training, the costs of meeting DOT's standards have become prohibitive. The American Bus Association has supported federal grant funding to offset some of the costs to purchase lifts for motorcoaches. Over the past several years, Congress has provided $7 million a year to bus companies to defray the cost of wheelchair lifts. The Disability Rights Coalition joins us in requesting the continuation of this program.
