Name: Sherrie Ortiz
Company: Just One Day Travel Tours
City, State: Kansas City Mo.
Years in the Industry: 2 years, but launched in sept 2019, then covid, and really just beginning ... again. ... and again. LOL Persistence is key
How did you first get involved in the industry?
I had considered the day travel industry many years ago. I was making plans to leave the retail bakery world. My mother frequently took day trip and enjoyed her experiences with the groups. At that time, we had 2 small children and travel business for me was not an option. That is when I opened my home-based commercial bakery business. I maintained that for 18 years. I had pondered the day travel idea off and on but just kept it on the back burner. After the kids were out of college, we opted to go with something new and launched Just One Day Travel Tours.
Who has inspired your career?
I’d say my Mom has been my biggest inspiration. She was always my biggest supporter and cheer leader. Also, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I enjoy the discovery process and being of service to others.
What has been the greatest challenge/opportunity in your career?
Having launched this business just in time for covid I think that ranks up there as the biggest challenge for this career choice. Even as difficult as it is, there are still many blessings in the ways business is done now. I also think society as a whole is reevaluating how they spend their days off and are willing to invest in a quality tour.
What advice would you give to others about working in this industry?
Just show up. Put it all out there, embrace social media and be out there. People want to know the real you and make those connections.
Why is it important for you to belong to Women in Buses Council?
I was attracted to the WIB group at first, for general information. The contacts and helpfulness of the group is what has kept me engaged. Everyone is very helpful and supportive.
