Since 1998, motorcoach operators have scrambled to comply with the Department of Transportation's Americans with Disabilities Act requirements to provide special accommodations to disabled passengers. With a typical wheelchair lift costing operators upwards of $40,000 per coach for the lift acquisition, installation and employee training, the costs of meeting DOT's standards have become prohibitive. The American Bus Association has supported federal grant funding [1] to offset some of the costs to purchase lifts for motorcoaches.
