Occupational Safety Health and Environmental Committee
Minutes, 2009 Summer Meeting
The Occupational Safety Health and Environmental Committee held its first meeting. After a brief round of introductions, the group discussed and approved a draft committee charter.
The purpose of the BISC Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Committee is to:

Identify, alert and advise membership to emerging regulatory issues and industry best practices to improve safety compliance and performance.

Review Safety Practices and available products in the bus and motor coach industry

Develop training and educational programs and material on industry safety practices and regulatory issues.

Foster Professionalism in providing safety services in the bus industry.
The committee reviewed the results of two sections of the initial member survey. The team brainstormed and prioritized top OSHA concerns and identified the following
- Knowledge about OSHA Regulations garnered the most focus from the group. (34) It was agreed that we should prioritize our efforts based on Top 5 Most cited regulations and most relevant regulations based on our SIC code. It was suggested that we provide a forum to show Member Resources Policy / SOP Best practices (10). Two immediate topics were on the top of the list.
1. OSHA Recordkeeping (18) was the next most requested single item.
2. Handling an OSHA Enforcement Inspections (7) Develop a simple reference card, what causes an OSHA inspection, How to communicate with OSHA. - Recommend and/or provide OSHA Training/Certification (15)
- Understanding OSHA Website Resources (9)
The second survey category reviewed was Workers' Compensation. The team engaged in discussion to prioritize membership concerns in the following areas:
- Establish a forum for sharing WC Best Practices (23).
- Guidelines for a Transitional Duty Program (23)
- Fact based Incident Investigation and Claim Reporting (19)
- Resources -Training and Education / State WC (7)
- Risk Finance and Claim Cost Allocation (5)
The Occupational Safety Health and Environmental Committee met together with the Human Performance Committee to listen to two guest speakers, Jeff Liva and Mark Everest.
Dr. Jeff Liva addressed the committee regarding Medical Examiner's Certificates and the medical review/oversight process.
Mr. Mark Everest spoke with the committee regarding the "Occupational Athlete Program".
- An Issue/Request for Action concerning "The Occupational Athlete" program was put before the joint committee. The committee voted unanimously to recommend this product to the BISC Membership as a means to raise worker awareness about personal health and wellness.
The Occupational Safety Health and Environmental Committee met together with the Human Performance Committee to listen to Barney Lawrence with OSHA present an overview of the OSHA Agency initiatives under the new administration and an overview of resources available on the OSHA website (www.OSHA.gov)
